Play is usually associated with having fun. Fun usually takes place in outdoor activities like the playground. Seldom do we think of having fun and play in the classroom. It seems that we draw a clear line to separate play from learning in the classroom.
Well we need a mind-set shift. Let’s take a look at fun and play in a typical classroom setting. The nursery children are learning about colours and exercising their choice of colours in colouring an elephant. When asked who wants to go next, there is no lack of volunteers. Everyone seems to want to have a go at it. They are having fun in the classroom while learning about colours.
The K2 children in their Chinese lesson were asked to label the occupation of each figure on the interactive board. The teacher did not have to coax them to come up. Even the non Chinese child did not shy away from doing the exercise during Chinese lesson.
How I wished there was fun in my classroom when I was a child.
